Rationale

It would be really helpful to have a possibility within Blender to bevel selected edges or faces instead of the whole mesh.
Changeable values should be:
- additional extrusion during bevel (number in Blender Units, 0 for no extrusion)
- inner offset (size of the new inner polygon)
- number of new edges (1,2,3....) during beveling (currently only 1 edge is implemented)

There is a external phyton script which handle the need to have a possibility to bevel a edge or face, but is currently available only by the help menu and does not have the other options.

I'm waiting for bevel on edge in blender 2.5 since begging...i think devs are waiting for bmesh...or it should be developed with bmesh....

or u can get a "fake" (bmesh &/or Blender) from graphicall.org(its safe now)...just open project in new blender & bevel things you need to & move back to stable beta...

Be warned, in Cinema 4d means something else than most people think.
What Cinema does under 'Bevel' Is what most users would consider inset+extrusion along normal.

Only one new thing I can say about this theme:

I really liked beveling in Modo. You can check it on luxology.com also there is a trial for full version. Modo allows to set Radius for beveling. So it's also subdivide a bevel onto defined number of cuts and place it accordingly to the circle formula. For many cases in SubDiv modelling it's very helpful.
