If you press alt and click on two objects that lie on top of each other you get a list from which you can choose which object you would like to select.
Very intuitive when you press SHIFT +alt + leftclick you can extent your selection with more objects.
BUT say you have 20 objects lying close to each other and you select all of them and want to deselect one...
Then shift + alt + leftclick does not work.
