Written by madmesh the 7 Dec 10 at 12:33. Category: Texturing & Materials. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
A material can be assigned to to a single face or a selection of faces. The current method of doing this for materials is functionally a duplicate of how vertex groups are assigned.

Isn't that what UV mapping does?

UV mapping is for textures, what I mean is for materials. To be specific multiple materials on one mesh.

To clarify:

Go to the Data tab, select your vertex group, click select, it will select the vertexes in the vertex group, then go to the materials tab and create another material for the vertex selection.

How ever, this can't be done automatically, so you could edit the vertex group and it would instanty assign the material to the group. Would be neat.

What I was thinking about was more along the lines of replacing the existing method with vertex groups.
