Rationale

In Blender all objects has got the same color of wireframe (default is black) and this could be inconvenient to find needed object in 3d view when wireframe shading is enabled.
Maybe opportunity of setting custom wireframe color for each object would be useful for many people?

@ps8: I can't test build from link you send me -- it's for windows but i'm using linux. Is that addon/patch avaliable independent of blender build?

If it is an addon, you should be able to find it in the 2.53/scripts/addons directory.

I started working on this today - easier than I thought.
I had thought about doing the same thing for armature bone objects but turns out to be easier to use the object wire colour.

Something to consider - What about when an object has a custom wire colour, does the group colour override the custom colour, or maybe a blend of the two, or an option to override the group colour as well?
I decided that selection colours should always override custom colours, also leave editing colours same.

Lights are not effected by the custom colour.
Force fields have the empty at the centre coloured but not the rings indicating the force.
Every other object uses the custom wire colour when drawing wireframe, that’s either in wireframe mode or with wireframe drawn over the solid object.
Selection and group colours override any custom colour setting.
Edit mode colours are not affected.
A mesh object that is used for a bone custom shape is drawn in the mesh objects custom colour not the armatures custom colour. The custom bone is also selection highlighted in it’s own colour (as in thicker lines) not the selection colour.
Ghosting poses are not affected by custom colours.

I have added another patch to the above that adds some operators. Three of them relate to the above patch, two others relate to idea #52

The operators are for the following -
1. toggle use custom wire colour on/off
2. copy use custom wire colour from active to all selected objects.
3. copy active objects custom wire colour to selected objects.

nice work, but i wish if the object itself had a random custom wire color on creation, that would save a lot of time in specifying colors for wires.

Make wire color in wireframe mode defined by object color.

Add a user preferences for a standard or a random color when adding a new object.
