Idea #238: Render to fisheye projection

Written by domejunky the 1 Nov 10 at 17:54. Category: Rendering. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Rendering content for fulldome theatres (Planetariums), which require a fisheye projection, is difficult in Blender.

There are a few workarounds, but they all have limitations:

External renderer - Yafray, Renderman (Air, PRMan), POVRay

Multiple cameras + post process stitching

Refractive sphere in Blender

Reflective near-hemisphere

The Ott Planetarium is willing to offer a bounty of sorts to the developer who implements solution #1:

We will provide the domemasters for all of our open source planetarium shows and a perpetual license for one of our closed-source shows to the developer's favorite planetarium, in the developer's name.

**UPDATED TO INCLUDE #4**

The Ott Planetarium is willing to offer a bounty of sorts to the developer who implements solution #1 OR #4:

We will provide the domemasters for all of our open source planetarium shows and a perpetual license for one of our closed-source shows to the developer's favorite planetarium, in the developer's name.

I suppose solution #1 and #4 are basicly the same. Having a fisheye lens means that the camera is capable of curvilinear perspective.

Cycles now has a built-in fisheye camera (equidistant should be what planetarium people are looking for, but equisolid looks pretty neat as well).

I don't think a similar (built-in) solution will be made for blender internal any soon (/ever) though. So two questions:

(1) can we consider this implemented and close this entry?
(2) is the bounty valid for the cycles only implementation ;)
