Rationale
In still images it is easy to control the number of vertices as needed, but when working on animation where models are often moving towards and away from the camera it is not easy to change levels of detail seemlessly.
Approximate AO/IL is far more useful than Raytrace AO for animations due to its speed advantage. As far as I know Approximate AO works on per vertex calculations. It would be useful to be able to calculate on say every nth vertex (or some other vertex decimation algorithm) and have other vertex values interpolated between for high poly scenes.
