Rationale
Right now the toon line/edges system, while giving excellent looking results is REALLY limited.

In my work I animate qualities of toon lines and use objects with different stroke types that interact with eachother (collision lines). This is not possible with blender. In Maya it's not only incredibly easy, but very powerful and versatile. This is mainly because it is not a scene or render setting, but a separate renderable effect.

Since blender's edges system is just a render setting, it's impossible to selectively apply toon lines per object/material/group and have them collide.

also, it would be nice to be able to effect the edge line with more characteristics than threshhold. If a user wanted to make a pencil sketched line in blender it would be hard or impossible. In other programs, a user can just hook up a distortion node or texture to a line quality. Even if more options of line quality were given, it would be impossible to have two objects with different line styles to be in the same render. Using render layers isn't great because there wouldn't be any collision lines. between the two objects with different line qualities.

the current edge system seems like all or nothing. I will admit that the results look great for what it can do, but unfortunately, it cannot do what many people need it to do.

Between shading options and nodes you can get good cartoony pics. I wonder what happened to the new render system that I thought was meant to be in 2.5? The stylistic rendering, giving a brush stroke like finish?

pnzr: that is awesome.

but, i can't find anywhere if this will allow lines to be selectively applied, by object, material, group or whatever. A lot of my stuff will require some objects to have different line quality or no line at all. this is easy to do in maya without learning a lot of code. unfortunately for this coming project for may i'll have to use maya. This project looks to be fantastic regardless. probably in a year blender will have everything i need.
