Idea #94: Direct Renderslot navigation

Written by sambler the 22 Aug 10 at 13:47. Category: User Interface. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Currently in the image editor when displaying the render result you have access to 8 slots. The J key can be used to cycle through and filled slots or between slot 1 and 2 if only slot 1 has been used.
It would be better to navigate directly between specific render slots. Which allows you to do a base render then use several slots for different sample settings or with ray and approximate gathering. Then switch from 1 to 2 then 1 to 3 and 1 to 4 to easily compare the original render to each different setting change instead of one after the other.

It may also be useful to add the K key as the hokey to go forward, and the J key be used to go to the previous render slot.

I have added an updated patch at projects.blender that includes bi-directional cycling. I decided to use the H key as positionally it makes more sense.

I saw someone over at blenderartists talking about having made a patch for this, and asked about clearing render slots as well. He quickly implemented it in his patch, then said someone else (you) had already posted a similar patch here on blenderstorm.
However, i see the 'clear render slot' functionality isn't there yet. That would be immensely useful. I feel personally this is rather important, and beg you to add it in. Pretty please.
While I can see the usefulness of direct jumping to render slots using the number keys, I also like the idea of more than 10 render slots -- although one might not use that many very often. Perhaps make it an even 20, such that shift-(1 - 0) will access slots 11 - 20 as well ??
I'm really hoping this makes trunk -- and soon -- because I'm not a compiling type person at all really.
