Rationale

For complicated scenes, or long animations, you want to minimize Blender to do some other work or just step away from your computer.

No way to know if the render is at 1% or 99% unless you are at your computer looking at the render.

i think it should be built in… so blender doesn't become a giant tower of addons =)

That was exactly what I did my "Blender Notifier" script for. It's for Blender 2.49 - http://blenderecia.orgfree.com/index.php/blender/blender-notifier/

I'm waiting to Blender 2.5 to support Script Links or a similar system in order to port it.
My idea is to make it work as an add-on. It will be nice to think about an interface for that (it was working with no UI at all).
