Idea #340: Primitive 3d manipulator.

Written by xoxol the 2 May 11 at 17:20. Category: User Interface. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
1. As it stands there is absolutely no way to fully manipulate meshes without keyboard shortcuts (sigh).
As I prefer mouse-only interaction most of the time, not only with the objects/meshes but also the rest of the UI, I get depressed by Blenders primitive 3d manipulator. for instance one cannot lock an axis without needing to go the keyboard shortcut route; one can transform along 1 or 3 axes but not 2 (simultaneously obviously) !

2. 3d manipulator lacks sensitivity choice for scaling.

Stage 2: Operator (sets the sensitivity of movement as a value proportional to the distance of the mouse cursor to the selection as it was upon entering this stage (2).

Blender has been created to be used with one hand on keyboard, and other hand on mouse/pen. Hence the strong reliance towards keyboard triggered actions.

That said, an improved 3d manipulator would be nice to have.

Since 3d manipulator and UI operators as suggested are two separate things, it would be better if you created a new proposal for the UI ignorant operators.

I have edited this (couldn't edit the idea's title however). You can delete the comment starting with "Stage 2: Operator..." since I can't do it. Also kindly remove this very comment for the same reason.

Thanks!

At one point the mouse oriented Loq Airou modeller was touted as a possible alternate modelling interface for Blender, along with integration for the Verse live asset management system.

Though I am certain this attempt was abandoned, it would be nice to have the ability to toggle between a couple interface sytems, especially as new computer interfaces (such as touch, multiple input) are becoming more available.

- title edited :)

, I find loq airou quite hard to use - I guess it's a matter of practice though. But indeed, thinking about multitouch/multi-input is probably going to be important in the coming years as such devices become more common.
