It could save after rendering part, eg. when set to render 64 parts - if you pause in mid-rendering(No. 32 is done, and 33. is halfway there) it could wait to render last part (No. 33), or save on previous (No. 32).

Speaking for free publicly distributed rendering services like ours (Renderfarm.fi), solution number #1 would be absolutely awesome to have working.

Like Nomis suggested in his original post, our issue with Blender is basically that there is currently simply no way to save state if the user quits their BOINC client or closes down their machine. This means a lot of volunteers computing resources are wasted (for example a work unit stopped before 100% is reached, next time the clients starts calculating from 0% again).

Staying on the topic I would rather see this working without the parts setting in use (as suggested by Venthe), since BURP doesn't use that information, but instead has it's own method for slicing the frame.

Actually, I know that Janne Karhu has been working on code related to this, so I'm marking this idea as being in development.

I doubt it'll be here for 2.56 though, but who knows!

why dont you just port the work to png then composite it in blender vse or your favourite video editor.....blenderguru aka andrew price has a tutorial on doing this in the latest version of blender

becuase with png you can render a small batch of frames at a time then start from the next bunch thereafter......its efficienct as well.
