Agreed, particle systems need a major overhaul. Good news is: i'm working on it ;) At the risk of sounding a bit braggy: i encourage everyone interested in particles to take a look at my new blog at http://phonybone.planetblender.org, the design document (http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/User:Phonybone/ParticlesDesign) and the "particles-2010" branch on SVN (binary builds on graphicall are always appreciated). It's missing a lot of features still and many are experimental, but making progress and becoming more stable every day.
That being said, i think the topic of generic particle systems is too wide to be covered here in detail. The way i see it this page is intended for smaller feature additions that can be explained in a few lines and quickly implemented.

phonybone - you can mark this request as being in development. AFAIK people can still just comment in here to refine.
Also, if this big one can be split up into smaller, more feasible (workwise) requests, I am fine with people splitting up into new requests.
It should allow for good tracking too.
Anyway, I'll add a new category Particles so related requests can be categorised properly. |

| Good idea, but better examples what can be done with nodes are Houdini and Softimage. To put it simple nodes should control any type of simulation, not only particles. And have access to all scene data acceptable from python scripts. |

| Why not promote particles to "real" objects, or at least having all of the attributes of their specified object representation, including node based properties and the ability to spawn other particles. To do so, and in a more general sense it would be good to have node properties on all objects based on a relative time from creation (life). Perhaps this life attribute could be "time since last keyframe", with that keyframe for the "creation" property. |

ICE in softimage (probably same thing in Houdini) is a powerfull system where you control many things. It's near to be a node based programming system. You can make crazy think like Lagoa Multiphysics ( http://www.blendernation.com/2010/08/13/lagao-multiphysics-demo/ ). FX and particules is not my departement (lighting and rendering) but know many friends and collegue working with ICE every day and two of them work with Thiago Costa (Lagoa Multiphysics creator) at Ubisoft Montreal.
For me the return of reactor particles options in Blender is not a features , it must be there. It's a minimum to making many interesting particles effects.
Node based particules is a good idea if you can do a lot more than now and open to is user many other possibility. Thanks to Phonybone to working on it. |
